Project Update –July 27, 2026
The Parks and Recreation Commission meets at noon on Wednesday, July 29th in Rebekah Hall and on Zoom. The public is encouraged to attend and participate in these discussions.
The meeting agenda, packet, and Zoom link is provided below:
This meeting agenda includes a worksession (item 4) to review and discuss the Town Park Oval Improvements Project and specifically the Oval surfacing plan with regards to the project goals, design and uses, management, facility scheduling and community impacts.
Improvements focus on active and passive recreation, infrastructure, and public gathering space that serves residents and visitors year-round.
The P&R Commission and Staff acknowledge that the project design might need to be modified and revised to accurately represent the latest community feedback and perspectives. To address this, Staff collaborated with the project design team to create two additional design options for the Oval area, which are included in the meeting packet for feedback from the Commission and the public. Please review the meeting packet in advance of the meeting.
The meeting packet also includes written comments and petitions received as of Thursday, July 23rd for Commission member review ahead of the meeting.
If you would like to provide written comment for distribution to the P&R Commission in advance of the meeting, please email your comments to rmcgovern@telluride.gov by 10am on Tuesday, July 28.
Written comments received after the deadline will be distributed to P&R Commission under separate cover but cannot guarantee full consideration if not delivered by the deadline.
Project Overview
The Town of Telluride Parks & Recreation Department is making significant improvements to the Town Park Core Area, focusing on recreation, infrastructure, and public gathering space that serves residents and visitors year-round. This project is the third phase of the Core Area Improvements outlined in the 2020 Town Parks Master Plan, following completion of the Skatepark (2022) and the Warming Hut & Washstand (2025).
The Oval Construction
Surfacing and perimeter improvements to support community gatherings, special events, sports courts, and the winter ice rink.
Original design completed in 2021 and updated in 2025.
Partial carryover from 2025 in terms of scope and budget allocation.
Warner Field Safety Netting
Installation of new outfield fencing and safety netting on part of Warner Field.
Full design completed in 2025.
Includes a new center-field gate to improve pedestrian circulation for special events and the general public.
Project Goals & Benefits
Oval Improvements:
Support a wide range of existing uses: community gatherings, special events, informal activities, and winter ice rink.
Add new recreational opportunities to meet growing demand:
Basketball – the current court cannot meet demand.
Pickleball – the shared tennis court is insufficient during peak hours.
Wall ball – a new facility requested frequently by participants.
The proposed concrete surface will improve summer drainage and winter ice-making conditions.
A management plan will be developed and approved by the Parks & Recreation Commission to ensure fair and equitable use.
Warner Field Safety Netting:
Protects surrounding facility users during adult softball games.
Potentially opens Core Area availability on Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Sunday evenings and Saturday mornings/afternoons during adult softball season (mid-May through late-July).
Includes a new center-field gate to improve flow exiting Town Park during large events.
