Main Street Accessibility Ramp Project
Making Colorado Avenue Safer and More Accessible for Everyone
The Town of Telluride is moving forward with the Main Street Accessibility Ramp Project, an important effort to improve safety and accessibility along Colorado Avenue, our busiest and most visited corridor. The project focuses on replacing non-compliant sidewalk ramps and enhancing pedestrian and vehicle safety at key intersections between Aspen Street and Alder Street.
Bump-out ramps, also known as curb extensions or bulb-outs, are a traffic calming measure designed to increase safety for pedestrians and improve traffic flow. One of the primary benefits of bump-out ramps is the enhanced visibility they provide. By extending the sidewalk, bump-outs reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians, making them more visible to oncoming drivers. This improved visibility is crucial in preventing accidents, as drivers have a clearer line of sight to individuals waiting to cross the street.
Bump-out ramps also play a vital role in regulating parking near intersections. By extending the curb line, these ramps physically prevent vehicles from parking too close to the intersection. This not only maintains clear sight lines for drivers but also ensures that the intersection remains unobstructed for turning vehicles and emergency services.
This work directly supports the Telluride Town Council’s goal to Enhance Accessibility for Everyone, ensuring that all residents and visitors, regardless of age or ability, can safely navigate Main Street.
What’s the Issue?
During past assessments, several intersections along Colorado Avenue were found to have sidewalk ramps that no longer meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. These ramps can be challenging for people pushing strollers, using wheelchairs, or walking with mobility aids. Many curbs also have cracking, uneven surfaces, or steep slopes that create safety concerns year-round, especially in winter conditions.
Improving these ramps and upgrading the surrounding surfaces is key to maintaining safe, accessible sidewalks and crossings for all users. Bringing pedestrian lighting up to current standards provides additional nighttime safety to pedestrians and vehicular users alike.
What’s Happening?
The project includes:
- Replacing old concrete ramps and sidewalks at seven intersections
- Installing new curb and gutter and asphalt patches
- Upgrading heated sidewalk areas with new heat coils
- Replacing and reinstalling Town-supplied lamp posts on updated bases
- Coordinating concrete, asphalt, electrical, and plumbing work at each location
What’s the Timeline?
The contractor for this project is KSK, based in Grand Junction, Colorado. Work is scheduled to begin May 12, 2025, starting at the intersection of Colorado and Pine Street.
Before work begins at each intersection, businesses and properties nearby will be contacted directly by the contractor. The Town will post an updated construction timeline on this page as it becomes available.
No construction will take place during major festivals and during Town-observed public holidays.
The tentative timeline, which is subject to change, is as follows:
What to Expect During Construction
- Sidewalk and ramp closures at active work zones
- Temporary pedestrian detours and signage
- Lane changes for vehicles in the construction area
- Construction noise and activity during daytime hours
- Ongoing communication from the Town and the contractor
The project will be utilizing a street closure on N Pine St between Colorado Ave and the alley for staging equipment and materials throughout the project's duration.
We are working to ensure that access to Main Street businesses remains open and safe throughout the duration of the project. The Project Team will work directly with businesses to ensure access and mitigate construction impacts.

How to Get Involved
The Main Street Accessibility project was approved through the 2025 budget process by Town Council in the Fall of 2024. A public engagement session was held with Main Street businesses, especially those with parklets, in January.
